Autumn Flowers: What's in Season
On this page

Autumn is, quietly, one of the loveliest times of year to be a florist. As the West Yorkshire mornings turn crisp and the light goes golden, the flowers follow suit — deepening from summer's bright pastels into warm, wine-dark, spice-box tones. If you love a bouquet with real depth and texture, this is your season.

Here's our guide to what's in season this autumn in the UK, the palettes we're reaching for in the studio, and how to choose blooms that hold their beauty for as long as possible — whether you'd like a fresh seasonal arrangement or something designed to last indefinitely.

A warm autumn hand-tied bouquet of dahlias, chrysanthemums, berries and copper foliage in rust, plum and bronze tones

What's in season this autumn

Seasonal flowers are at their best when they're grown for the time of year they naturally flower — they arrive fresher, look more generous, and tend to last longer in the vase. Here's what we're loving right now.

Dahlias

The undisputed star of the autumn garden. Dahlias flower generously from late summer right up until the first hard frost, in everything from dinner-plate blooms to tight, geometric pompons. Look for rich burgundy, dusky peach, coral and bronze — they bring instant drama to a hand-tied bouquet and make a wonderful focal flower.

Chrysanthemums

Far more sophisticated than their old-fashioned reputation suggests. 'Chrysanths' come in spider, spray, bloom and button forms, in tawny russets, deep plums and burnt orange. They're also one of the longest-lasting cut flowers you can buy, which makes them a brilliant, hard-working choice for autumn arrangements.

Hydrangeas

By autumn, hydrangea heads have matured into those coveted 'antique' shades — sage green flushed with plum, dusky pink and soft steel blue. They look beautiful fresh, and they also dry gracefully, so a single stem can carry on decorating a mantelpiece long after the rest of the bouquet has been enjoyed.

Berries, seed heads and foliage

This is where autumn texture really comes into its own. We love weaving in glossy rose hips, coral hypericum berries, viburnum and crab apple, alongside the feathery plumes of amaranthus and the turning tones of copper beech, seeded eucalyptus and oak. A few other autumn favourites worth asking for:

  • Asters and sedum, for soft clouds of colour
  • Celosia, for its unmistakable velvety texture
  • Rudbeckia and helenium, for warm golden accents
  • Ornamental grasses, for movement and an airy, gathered-from-the-garden feel

Warm autumn palettes to fall for

If summer is all fresh brights, autumn is about warmth and richness. The palettes we return to again and again:

  • Spiced sunset — burnt orange, ochre, terracotta and gold, glowing like the turning leaves.
  • Deep and dramatic — plum, aubergine, oxblood and chocolate cosmos, for something moody and elegant.
  • Dusky and romantic — antique pink, mauve and toffee, with hydrangea and soft foliage for a gentle, timeless look.

Not sure which suits the moment? That's exactly the sort of thing we love to help with — tell us the recipient and the feeling you're after and we'll build the palette around it. You can browse our current seasonal designs on the shop, or take a look through our gallery for inspiration.

Making your autumn flowers last

Autumn stems are naturally hardy, and a little care goes a long way. With fresh flowers you can reasonably expect around 7–14 days of enjoyment with good care: trim the stems at an angle, refresh the water every couple of days, keep the vase out of direct sun and away from the fruit bowl (ripening fruit gives off ethylene, which ages blooms faster). Our full flower care guide walks through it step by step, and if you'd like to understand why in-season stems simply perform better, our seasonal flower guides are a good read.

A quick tip we swear by: chrysanthemums and hydrangeas both reward a fresh diagonal cut and clean water — treat them well and they'll happily outlast almost everything else in the vase.

If you want colour that never fades, our hand-crocheted and preserved flowers are made to last indefinitely — no water, no wilting, no drop. Our hand-crocheted flowers are worked in soft yarn to your chosen autumn palette, while our preserved flowers keep the look of the real thing for years. Both are made to order in our Leeds studio and shipped UK-wide, and you can read more about everlasting options in our everlasting guides.

A gentle note on pets and allergies

A few beautiful autumn flowers aren't ideal around curious pets. Chrysanthemums and hydrangea are both commonly listed as toxic or irritant to cats and dogs, and lilies (which appear in some mixed autumn bouquets) are highly toxic to cats in particular. Roses, snapdragons, freesia and lisianthus are generally considered non-toxic and are lovely autumn-friendly choices — but please treat this as guidance rather than a medical guarantee, and check the ASPCA or Blue Cross plant lists (or your vet) if you're unsure about a specific home.

Where safety or hay fever is a real concern, our crochet and preserved flowers are the genuinely worry-free gift: crochet is simply inert yarn — pollen-free, with nothing to ingest — and preserved stems are pollen-free too (though never edible). If allergies are the priority, our allergy-friendly bouquet guide lays out the options.
