Winter & Christmas Flowers

There's a particular magic to flowers in the depths of a British winter. When the garden is bare and the light is low, a vase of deep red amaryllis or a handful of quietly nodding hellebores does something a summer bouquet never quite can — it feels like a small act of defiance, a spot of colour and life against the grey. Add the resinous scent of pine and eucalyptus and you have the whole feeling of the season in one arrangement.
Winter is also our busiest gifting stretch, from early Advent right through to New Year, so this guide covers what's genuinely in season, how to choose flowers as a present, an honest note on poinsettia and pet safety, and why ordering ahead matters more now than at any other time of year. For the wider picture, our seasonal flowers hub collects every month-by-month guide in one place.
What's blooming in a British winter
Winter's palette is smaller than summer's but no less beautiful — and often more dramatic, with jewel reds, creamy whites and soft blush tones set against rich green foliage. These are the blooms we reach for most between December and February:
- Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) — the showstopper of the season. Enormous trumpet flowers on tall, sculptural stems, most loved in velvety scarlet and pure white. A few stems alone make a statement.
- Hellebores — the 'Christmas rose' and its cousins, with their gentle downturned faces in white, plum, dusky pink and green. Understated and wonderfully elegant.
- Ranunculus — layer upon layer of tissue-thin petals in a rose-like rosette, arriving as the season turns towards late winter. They bring softness to an otherwise structural mix.
- Anemones — inky-centred blooms in white, red and violet that add a touch of drama and contrast.
Working with the season isn't only prettier — it's fresher and kinder to the planet too, as our sustainability practices explain. If you'd like to see how these winter stars fit into the whole year, our seasonal flower guides map it out across the calendar.
Evergreens, berries and the scent of Christmas
What truly makes a winter arrangement feel festive is the greenery. Foliage does the heavy lifting this time of year, adding structure, fragrance and that unmistakable Christmassy note:
- Eucalyptus — silvery, aromatic and endlessly versatile, it softens any winter design.
- Pine, spruce and fir — the scent of Christmas itself, brilliant in wreaths, table pieces and hand-tied bouquets.
- Holly and ivy — the classic pairing, glossy leaves and bright berries steeped in midwinter tradition.
- Seeded eucalyptus, hypericum berries and dried seed heads — texture and a little sparkle, especially lovely with a candle.
We fold these into bespoke pieces for the season — take a look at our gallery for inspiration, or browse what's currently available to order on our shop page.
A note on poinsettia — and keeping pets safe
No festive flower guide is complete without the poinsettia. Happily, its fearsome reputation is largely a myth: poinsettias are only mildly irritant, and the milky sap can cause a little stomach upset or skin and eye irritation if handled or nibbled — unpleasant rather than dangerous. Still, it's sensible to keep them out of reach of curious pets and small children, and to wash your hands after trimming.
Pet safety matters year-round, and winter brings a few plants worth knowing about. As general guidance — never a medical guarantee — lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis) are highly toxic to cats, and several common flowers, including chrysanthemum, hyacinth, ranunculus and ivy, are frequently listed as toxic or irritant to cats and dogs. Roses (true Rosa), sunflowers, snapdragons, orchids, freesia and lisianthus are generally considered non-toxic and make safer choices in a home with animals. Festive favourites such as amaryllis and poinsettia are among the plants people most often ask about, so if you share your home with a pet, do check the ASPCA or Blue Cross plant lists — or ask us and we'll happily steer you towards a pet-friendlier design.
Where safety is the priority, our hand-crocheted flowers and preserved flowers are the genuinely worry-free gift. Crochet blooms are inert yarn — pollen-free with nothing to ingest — and preserved stems are pollen-free too (though not edible), so both sit safely in a home with pets or hay fever, and last far longer than the festive fortnight.
Gifting winter flowers
Flowers are one of the most welcome winter gifts there is, whether it's a hostess bringing warmth to a Christmas table or a bunch to brighten someone's January. For more present inspiration, browse our gift guides. A few thoughts on choosing:
For Christmas
Reach for the classics — red amaryllis, white hellebores, pine and berries — or let us build something bespoke to a colour scheme. Our Christmas flowers page is the best place to start, and we can help with everything from a single statement gift to festive table pieces.
For every other winter occasion
Winter is full of moments beyond Christmas. Whether it's an anniversary, a birthday, a get-well pick-me-up in the cold months, or a thank-you, browse the full range of occasions under flowers for every occasion. Fresh arrangements are delivered locally across Leeds and West Yorkshire — see flower delivery in Leeds — while our crochet and preserved pieces ship UK-wide, perfect for posting to loved ones you can't be with over the holidays.
Order ahead for the festive peak
December is the one time of year we'd gently urge you to plan. The festive fortnight is our busiest by far, dates get booked up, and the most sought-after blooms move quickly. We work on prompt dispatch all year — and for Leeds, there's no strict cut-off, so get in touch and we'll do our best for same-day delivery across the city, subject to availability — but for fixed dates around Christmas and for UK-wide crochet and preserved orders, ordering ahead is the surest way to get exactly what you want, when you want it.
To keep your fresh winter flowers looking their best (typically 7–14 days with a little care), see our flower care guide — cool rooms and fresh water go a long way in a centrally heated house. When you're ready, start on our shop page or get in touch for something bespoke.
Frequently asked questions
Are poinsettias poisonous?
Their reputation is largely a myth — poinsettias are only mildly irritant, and the sap may cause minor stomach upset or skin irritation rather than serious harm. Even so, keep them away from curious pets and children, and check the ASPCA or Blue Cross lists if you're unsure.
What flowers are actually in season in the UK in winter?
Amaryllis, hellebores, ranunculus and anemones are the winter stars, paired with fragrant evergreens like eucalyptus, pine and holly. Our seasonal flower guides show the full year at a glance.
Which winter gift is safest for a home with pets or allergies?
Our hand-crocheted and preserved flowers are the worry-free choice: crochet is inert, pollen-free yarn with nothing to ingest, and preserved stems are pollen-free too. Both last far beyond Christmas and ship UK-wide.
How far ahead should I order for Christmas?
As early as you comfortably can. We work on prompt dispatch, but December is our busiest season and fixed dates fill up — ordering ahead is the safest way to secure your date and your first-choice blooms. For Leeds there's no strict cut-off, so do ask us about same-day delivery, subject to availability.
