Everlasting Flowers Explained: Crochet vs Preserved vs Dried
On this page

Fresh flowers are a joy precisely because they don't last — a hand-tied bouquet is a moment, gathered and gone within a week or two. But not every gift wants to be fleeting. Sometimes you want a keepsake: a bloom that survives the anniversary, the house move, the long-distance hug, the first year of a new baby's life. That's where everlasting flowers come in — and it's one of the questions we're asked most often here in our Leeds studio.

The trouble is that “everlasting” gets used as a catch-all for three quite different things: hand-crocheted yarn flowers, preserved real blooms, and dried flowers. They look different, feel different, cost different amounts and want completely different care. This guide walks through all three so you can choose with confidence — whether you're buying for yourself or for someone who deserves something that lasts.

What do we mean by “everlasting” flowers?

An everlasting flower is any bloom designed to outlive the natural vase life of a cut stem. Fresh flowers, cared for well, give you around 7–14 days of beauty. Everlasting flowers stretch that from months into years — or, in the case of crochet, effectively forever.

They fall into three families, and the differences matter:

  • Crochet flowers — sculpted entirely from yarn. Not a plant at all, so nothing to wilt, drop or trigger allergies.
  • Preserved flowers — genuinely real blooms, gently treated so they stay soft and lifelike without water.
  • Dried flowers — real blooms left to air-dry naturally, keeping their shape but turning delicate and papery.

All three are shipped UK-wide, so they make wonderful gifts for someone far away. (Our fresh arrangements, by contrast, are for local delivery across Leeds and West Yorkshire only.) If you'd like the fuller picture as you read, our everlasting flowers guides collect everything in one place.

Crochet flowers: yarn blooms that never fade

Crochet flowers are exactly what they sound like: individual petals, leaves and centres, each one hooked from yarn by hand and assembled into a stem. Every bloom in our crochet flower collection is made to order in our Leeds studio, which means colours, combinations and sizes can be tailored to whatever you have in mind.

Look and feel

Crochet has a soft, tactile, slightly stylised charm — it reads unmistakably handmade rather than trying to fool the eye into thinking it's fresh. That's part of the appeal. People stroke the petals; children love them; they photograph beautifully.

Lifespan

This is the headline: crochet flowers are permanent. There is nothing organic to decay, so a crochet bouquet you're given today can still be on the mantelpiece in a decade. The only real caution is that, like any fabric, yarn can fade if left in strong, direct sunlight for years — so a bright spot out of harsh sun keeps the colours true.

Care

Wonderfully low-maintenance. No water, no food, no fuss. An occasional dust with a soft brush or a gentle puff of air is all they ask.

Best for

Crochet is the worry-free choice when longevity — or safety — is the priority. Because the yarn is inert, there's no pollen and nothing to ingest, which makes crochet ideal for homes with cats, dogs or hay fever sufferers, and for hospital or care settings. They're a lovely, lasting way to mark a birthday, a new baby, or a get well wish. For more inspiration, browse our gift guides.

Preserved flowers: real blooms, paused in time

Preserved flowers are the option people most often misunderstand — so it's worth being clear. These are real flowers. The difference is that their natural moisture has been gently replaced with a plant-based solution, which keeps the petals supple, colour-rich and lifelike without any need for water. The result is a genuine bloom that behaves like a keepsake.

Look and feel

Preserved flowers are the closest of the three to fresh — soft to the touch, richly coloured, and convincingly natural, because they are natural. Roses, in particular, preserve beautifully. Each of our preserved arrangements is hand-finished, so no two are identical.

Lifespan

With gentle care, preserved flowers typically last many months, and often a year or more — considerably longer than dried, though not the indefinite lifespan of crochet. Over a long time colours may soften, which is a natural part of their charm rather than a fault.

Care

  • No water — ever. Moisture is the enemy of preserved flowers and will cause them to spoil.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from humidity (so not a steamy bathroom).
  • Handle sparingly and dust only very lightly; the petals are soft but not indestructible.

Best for

Preserved flowers suit the person who wants the romance of real petals with the permanence of a keepsake — a milestone anniversary, a heartfelt thank you, or a lasting token of sympathy that a grieving family can keep long after the funeral flowers have gone. Because they carry no pollen and don't need water, they're also a thoughtful, low-effort gift for someone who isn't able to tend to fresh stems.

Dried flowers: nature's own keepsake

Dried flowers are real blooms and grasses that have been air-dried, keeping their form as their moisture leaves naturally. Think of the rustic bunches of wheat, statice, and papery seed heads that have become such a staple of relaxed, natural styling.

Look and feel

Dried flowers have a muted, earthy, textured beauty — colours are gentler and more faded than preserved, and the whole effect is wonderfully organic. They lean into the “natural imperfection” look rather than hiding it.

Lifespan

Dried flowers can last many months, but they're the most delicate of the three. They grow brittle over time, shed petals and seeds if knocked, and gradually fade — especially in sunlight. They're a keepsake, but a fragile one.

Care

  • Keep them dry — never mist or place near steam; moisture makes dried flowers droop and can invite mould.
  • Position away from draughts and direct sun to slow fading and shedding.
  • Handle as little as possible; dusting is best done with a hairdryer on a cool, low setting held well back.

Best for

Dried flowers are perfect for anyone drawn to a natural, boho, autumnal aesthetic, and for spots in the home where they'll be admired rather than handled. If you love the seasonal, foraged feel, dried arrangements sit beautifully alongside our fresh work.

Which everlasting flower is right for you?

Here's the quick head-to-head. If you take nothing else away, this is it:

Choose crochet for “forever” and total safety; choose preserved for real petals that last a long time; choose dried for a natural, textured look you don't mind being delicate.
  • Lifespan: Crochet (effectively permanent) > Preserved (many months to a year or more) > Dried (months, becoming fragile).
  • Look: Preserved is closest to fresh; dried is muted and natural; crochet is charmingly, deliberately handmade.
  • Care: Crochet is the most forgiving (just dust it); preserved and dried both need to be kept dry and out of sun.
  • Durability in a busy home: Crochet wins hands down — it can be picked up, hugged and posted about with no worry.

A note on pets and allergies

If safety is your reason for choosing everlasting flowers, this matters. Crochet is the truly worry-free option: the yarn is inert, so there's no pollen and nothing harmful to ingest. Preserved flowers carry no pollen either, though they are not edible and shouldn't be treated as a snack by curious pets or toddlers.

Where fresh flowers are involved, do take care. Lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis) are highly toxic to cats, and blooms such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, hydrangea, chrysanthemum, ranunculus and ivy are commonly listed as toxic or irritant to cats and/or dogs. Roses (true Rosa), sunflowers, snapdragons, orchids, freesia and lisianthus are generally considered non-toxic. This is guidance rather than a medical guarantee — always check your vet or the ASPCA / Blue Cross plant lists if you're unsure, and see our allergy-friendly bouquet guide for more. When you simply can't risk it, crochet or preserved flowers take the worry away entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between preserved and dried flowers?

Both are real blooms, but dried flowers are simply air-dried and become papery and brittle, while preserved flowers have their moisture gently replaced so they stay soft, colour-rich and lifelike. Preserved flowers generally look closer to fresh and tend to last longer.

How long do crochet flowers last?

Effectively forever — there's nothing organic to decay. A crochet bouquet can look wonderful for years and years. The only care is keeping it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can slowly fade yarn just as it would any fabric.

Are everlasting flowers safe for cats and dogs?

Crochet flowers are the safest choice, as the yarn is inert with no pollen and nothing toxic to ingest. Preserved flowers are also pollen-free but aren't edible. With fresh flowers, avoid lilies around cats especially, and check your vet or the ASPCA / Blue Cross plant lists if you're unsure.

Do preserved flowers need water or sunlight?

No water at all — moisture will spoil them. Keep preserved flowers out of direct sunlight and away from humidity, dust them very lightly, and they'll reward you for many months, often well over a year.
